KAMO Newsletter for December, 2018
Hello to all KAMO mentors and friends,
This is KAMO President Mark Walters with my monthly update.
The Joe Deer Hunt At the MacKenzie Center which was held the second weekend of December was attended by 25 young hunters the same amount of mentors and several volunteers. Bob and Linda Broduer, Rick Miotke and Patti and Jeff Rouse deserve a hearty
thank you from everyone for running this incredible hunt without a flaw.
Kids And Mentors Outdoors recently received a solid donation
that is really going to help with what we do and give us the ability to
become more creative in the future.
On Saturday, January 5th the Marsh/Point Chapter of KAMO will
be holding a simple but unique event with a campfire, some food, puppies
and I believe bb gun lessons.
As always I want to thank you for everything that you do for
KAMO. We are achieving what we set out to do!

KAMO Mentoring Tip of the Month
Dress warm, wear layers it works really well. Go for a
walk, maybe go cross country skiing. Start a campfire, pull up a chair
and relax. Tie on a pair of ice skates, start out slow and have
fun. Ice fishing is a blast and not that difficult to learn how to
do, take a friend or a neighbor kid. Rabbit hunting is very exciting
and a great way to learn about nature in winter. If you really want to
challenge yourself, try predator hunting. Coyote are very intelligent and
very interesting to hunt. The bottom line is go outside and enjoy the
season, you will have zero regrets.

News from the Coulee Chapter:
Coulee mentors took kids to Poynette and they did well hunting. Zoelyn Peterson won a.243 rifle on bingo night. The following weekend, two mentors took two kids to Badgerland near Westby for a pheasant hunt.
A professor from the university involved in Environmental Science offered a nature sketching class at the Holmen library on December 12th and there was a solid turn out. The library borders the Halfway Creek Trail making it easily accessible for a group to get both outdoor and indoor exposure for winter activities. These silent sports activities are crucial for us to balance our hook and bullet.
We are preparing to take a large group into the Shenanigan?s facility on French Island on the afternoon of the 27th. We have invited groups from Boys and Girls and BBBS as well as our own. We need new kids/ families in our chapter, and we hope to gain some interest among these fresh people we are inviting.
Mike took the Wisconsin Hunting Mentor certification program offered in La Crosse. It entails about two and a half hours of watching video/ reading, taking a short quiz, and attending a two hour class. There is some good information put out, the graduate gets added to the state?s liability policy ($1,000,000),and access to the IHEA hunter discount program. An example of a discount is Savage Arms at 40% off. The people running it have offered to do it for KAMO chapters throughout the state.
Coulee?s trailer was wrapped in pictures and logos. It looks really sharp. We currently have it parked at Gander Outdoors and plan to move it from one retail location to the next for advertising purposes. We have been offering rewards to kids who can email me and tell me where the trailer is currently parked.
Brad Allen of the Marshfield chapter came by my house last week while in La Crosse for business and we looked at some things on my computer and talked generally.

News from our Indianhead Chapter:

No news from the Lake Wisconsin nor MarshPoint Chapters.
News from our Meadow Valley Chapter:
We had 7 members present for our December meeting.
It appears our annual raffle sales are going very well. This is our only fund raising event of the year.
Mentor Activity:
Jeff took Tobias and Aaron/Janine took Allison deer hunting during the gun deer season.
We had 6 members from our chapter mentor kids at the Joe hunt. All kids enjoyed themselves. Many Thanks to Rick/Bob for their endless work in organizing this event and to Patty and Jeff for their cooking expertise. Very much appreciated.
In a kind of feel good story, Tom St Clair mentored a kid from the southern part of the state deer hunting on his land this year and the kid shot a doe. The feel good part of the story is Tom mentored this boy during the Joe hunt 5 years ago and has stayed in touch with him ever since. Each year after Thanksgiving, the boy has hunted on Tom’s land but never successful.. This year he was. Way to go Tom!
We continue to discuss advertising ideas but have not yet reached a final decision. This will be on the January Agenda.
We tentatively set February 16th as our ice fishing day and March 2nd for our maple syrup event.
Respectfully submitted, Bob Nicksic
News from the Northwoods Chapter:
The Northwoods Chapter had their final meeting of 2018 on December 12.
We had a good discussion on the past years events and an open forum on the future of our chapter. After much deliberation, it was decided that with the personal we have and the amount of time available, we can realistically do four events a year. One on ones with kids would be in addition to the mix.
Also, Judy Waite, our treasurer and founding member has decided to retire her post. She has been an inspiration to us all, and will still be available to guide us through the transition. I, for one, could always count on her to get things done, no matter what the task. A very capable lady, volunteer and close friend.
Natasha Shucha has graciously accepted the position of treasurer along with her duties as webmaster. We are blessed.
So onto 2019, enjoy your Christmas season, winter well.
Best,
