President?s remarks – Hello everyone,
This is Kids And Mentors Outdoors President Mark Walters with my
monthly update. About a month ago I wrote a column about KAMO that
was published in 62 newspapers Yesterday I was given a donation for
KAMO of $1000.00 and before that I received two, $100.00 checks. My
guess is that individual chapters have also been given donations that I
do not know about and my point is that people love the work that we are
doing.
Before leaving for Canada I had Tom St. Clair send $600.00 to our
newest chapter over in Beaver dam for some start up money which is fully
authorized by our BOD. Jim Braker and his crew will be holding their
first event which is on September 12th and is a picnic/water event on
Beaver dam lake.
As much as I hate to say this, Covid 19 is rearing its ugly head
again and about all that I can say is I hope it is short term.
Next month is the Youth Deer Hunt “second weekend in October”.
Please put some homework into this and take a kid deer hunting.

B.O.D. Teleconference – There is a need for a teleconference. It could be held in October when more members are available.

Electronic Forms – Have you ever given a kid a mentee form for his or her parents to fill out and not get it back? Have you missed out on getting a new volunteer because of the cumbersomeness of the two forms that were required?
Your chapter can eliminate those scenarios by using electronic mentee and mentor forms which can be given to a parent or volunteer in an email. They fill it out online and click ?submit? The data appears on a secure spreadsheet in the chapter Gmail account Someone involved with the development of this process can travel to meet with members of your chapter and set you up in this easy to use format.
In my opinion (Mike), the use of this system has the potential to make our group strengthen and grow.

Hunter Education – There were 41 regular hunter education and 79 internet field day classes offered statewide. 50 of these IFD?s are offered in just two communities – Waupaca (34) and Milladore (16) and in some regions there is nothing. The traditional classes are much more spread around.

Coulee – We held a rod gun club outing on the evening of August 10th at Holmen Rod and Gun Club. Both existing and new kids were introduced to trap and.22 rifle shooting. It was great to see how much the kids have grown. The kids were asking to do it again. A mentor took a kid out independently back to the rod and gun the following week.
On August 19th, KAMO ran the fish casting station at a collaborative event between Boys and Girls, the Sara Rose Hougum Foundation, and the La Crosse Police. Youth were given pontoon rides while waiting for the fish casting, then were each paired with an officer to try their hand at fishing. The event was televised and the fishing was solid considering it was 91 degrees and calm at that location (Municipal Boat Harbor).

Dodge County Conservation – Dodge County Conservation Chapter is having an Event Sept 12th From Noon to 3pm at Waterworks park in Beaver Dam, WI. Kids fishing, kayaking and Boat rides will be on the agenda. Lunch will be provided.
Also Jim Braker made contact with Marsh Haven Nature Center on Hwy 49 on the north side of Horicon Marsh. We will be having a further meeting to determine having kids come and learn about the Horicon Marsh.

Meadow Valley – Activity has been slow due to mentor travel.

Northwoods – NE chapter cancelled our senior fishing outing due to risk to the elderly. Twenty pheasants have been ordered for our fall trap shoot and hunt and it is scheduled for October 16th. Our chapter increased by 1 volunteer this summer with a couple more folks looking into it as well. Good things ahead hopefully,
