President?s Remarks – Hello to all KAMO members and friends,
This is Mark Walters, KAMO President, with my part of the monthly Newsletter. I hunted with a young KAMO Kid for turkey the entire weekend of Youth Turkey Hunt and we had a blast and she never took the gun off from safety. We have deer and turkey spotting contests, I always have good snacks and all we can do is hope a turkey comes in range. I took this same girl on the Youth Deer Hunt last fall and she harvested a beautiful 8-point buck.
Kids And Mentors Outdoors is chugging along at a steady pace and my buddy over to Beaver
Dam “Dodge County Chapter of KAMO” , Jim Braker, is sending me photos with great regularity.
Here is a simple thing for you to potentially bring people to the KAMO party. Have fires! I mean campfires – provide hot dogs, smores and water. Keep it simple and get the word out, minimal time and you are not burning your members out. I have had 3 at my house the last 3 months and they bring people together.
Bring yard games, do what I just said, you can actually run your meeting in a casual way at the fire and your chapter should grow.

Chapter Reports
Baraboo – The Baraboo River Chapter met on Monday April 10th at Rivers Edge. We had a guest from Upham Woods-Craig Boehlke who has invited us to have our June meeting at Upham Woods and wants to have some upcoming events/activities on their property. It turned out to be a ?small world story? when we learned he is a relative of ?Joe? and his nephew went on a Joe hunt with the KAMO group several years ago. Our group looks forward to working with Craig and maybe convince him to become a KAMO mentor as well.
We discussed the upcoming camping trip to Juneau County Park June 23?25th and will be joined by the new KAMO group from Dodge County Conservation. There was talk about the recent Hunter Safety Classes offered through Reedsburg Outdoor Club. They had 44 kids become certified between April 4?8th and ran a very good program.
Our club continues with raffle ticket sales and collected the money raised so far. The drawing for the .22 rifle, .243 rifle and Yeti cooler will be at our June 12th meeting. Tickets are $10 each or 3 for $20.
AJ and Rick have been working on website and Facebook updates and we determined that Rick is our administrator. Several pictures were submitted to Rick. Our next meeting is Monday May 8th at Rivers Edge starting at 7pm if anyone would like to come. Thanks Greg

Coulee – On April 1st, Randy and Mike helped run a hunter internet field day at the Omni Center in Onalaska in which there were 28 students and 3 KAMOKIDS.
A fishing float outing was canceled due to high water. A Norskedalen fossil outing was canceled due to cold and rainy weather and rescheduled until May 7th.
Kraig Hoff?s Benefit was held at the Onalaska American Legion on April 29th. It was a nasty day, but was held in a pole shed. Mentor John Kalas helped organize and run the event. Randy and Mike ran an informational/ outdoor equipment area.The numbers of people in attendance was remarkable and contributed much needed body heat to the uninsulated, unheated building..
The general public cleaned out their closets during the pandemic and gave our chapter equipment donations at a time we were giving little back out to the kids. Our chapter developed donation overflow – defined as being smothered by the generosity of the community to the point that shelf and floor space in our storage area was gone. Our chapter tables at the benefit had solid interest and we gave out or sold at bargain prices clothing, accessories, fishing lures, and more. Many kids scored on outdoor goodies to take home and the chapter storage area gained space.

Dodge County Conservation – DCC KAMO Chapter. held another Hunters Safety class. 26 kids participated and we had 5 perfect scores on the test. Congratulations to all the students and their hard work. A big Thank you goes out to the Beaver Dam Conservation club and its board of directors for letting us use the club to teach our future hunters safe and practical ways of hunting. To Jason Johnson and Marco’s Pizza for Lunch on Saturday.And finally to all the volunteer instructors for all their time and effort put forth to make this happen.
We have a few groups going to hike the Glacier trail the first weekend in May and we are also gaining a few female mentors as well. We also had a table at the Sportsmans rummage sale put on by the Conservation Congress. and did very well with a Raffle we had and also spreading the word about KAMO. We also had 2 mentored Turkey hunts and both were successful in getting there first turkey. Keep your eyes on our Facebook page . Lots going on for DCC KAMO.

Meadow Valley – We had 8 members at our April meeting. Jim provided a brief recap of
the State Kamo meeting in March. In conjunction with the Lemonweir Longbeards chapter of NWTF, we had 4 LTH participants during the youth turkey hunt with 2 birds harvested.
James Newlun suggested we participate in the fall Bear LTH. James is owner of Scenic Bluffs Outfitting and has offered to lead a group of mentors for 2 Bear LTH participants. Dan B will contact the State LTH coordinator for information on the application process. Our group
committed to assist James with this hunt providing we receive the LTH tags. This is a fantastic opportunity not only for the kids but mentors who would like to learn more about bear hunting.
JM (Fishing Club Advisor) is retiring from teaching this year and the club is in need of a new advisor.and Jeff will conduct an internal audit of our finances. It has been 2 years since our last audit.
We had zero applicants from New Lisbon for our Chapter KAMO scholarship and 4 applicants from Necedah High School. Unfortunately, none of the applicants met our scholarship requirements.

Northwoods – Hello from the snow covered Northwoods chapter,
A meeting was held Thursday to plan our summer events. Our hooked on fishing outing is planned for July 8th on Lake Emily. Several members are planning a meeting with the Channing Sportsman’s club in the U.P. for purchasing 6 cases of shotgun shells. The club offers trap and skeet, youth archery and an indoor .22 range. Our hope is to plan an event of some sort there this summer/fall. Our fall pheasant hunt is a go with a call yesterday from the Shady Game farm also. Usually in October. All good things except for the several inches of snow continuing as I type, Stay safe and have fun!!
